Is Swelling Normal After a Tooth Extraction?

If you have recently had a tooth extracted, you may notice swelling around your gums, cheek, or jaw. Although this can be an expected part of healing, it is natural to wonder how much swelling is normal and when it might indicate a problem.

Knowing what to expect after an extraction can help you recover more comfortably and recognize when you should contact your dentist.

Why Does Swelling Occur After an Extraction?

A tooth extraction affects the surrounding gum tissue and, in some cases, the bone around the tooth. Your body’s natural healing response can cause temporary inflammation, tenderness, and swelling.

The amount of swelling often depends on the complexity of the procedure. Removing a fully erupted tooth may cause less swelling than extracting an impacted wisdom tooth or a tooth that requires a more involved surgical procedure.

Swelling may become more noticeable during the first 48 to 72 hours before gradually improving. Mild bruising and tenderness can also occur during recovery.

How Can You Manage Swelling at Home?

Following your dentist’s aftercare instructions is one of the best ways to support healing. During the first 24 hours, a cold compress applied to the outside of the cheek in short intervals may help reduce swelling. Resting with your head slightly elevated can also be helpful.

Choose soft foods that do not require much chewing, and stay hydrated. Avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, or forcefully rinsing or spitting during the initial healing period, as these actions can disturb the blood clot that forms in the extraction site.

Follow your Santa Monica dentist’s instructions about brushing, rinsing, and taking any recommended medication. Gentle cleaning is important, but the extraction area needs time to heal.

When Is Swelling a Cause for Concern?

Swelling should generally begin to improve after its initial peak. Contact your dentist if it continues to increase after the first few days, worsens instead of improving, or is accompanied by fever, pus, a persistent unpleasant taste, or pain that becomes more severe.

Difficulty breathing or swallowing, or rapidly spreading swelling involving the face or neck, requires emergency medical attention.

Your dentist can assess whether your symptoms are part of normal healing or suggest an issue such as infection or another post-extraction complication.
